Student Disability Accommodations

Student Accessibility and Testing works with students to establish individualized accommodation plans specific to the student's disability-related need. The goal of accommodations is to remove or modify barriers so that students with disabilities have equitable access to their education and opportunities at Missouri S&T.

Students, course instructors, or staff members who have questions or concerns about accommodations or their implementation should promptly contact Student Accessibility and testing.

Common Accommodations and Their Implementation

These are adjustments to the standard exam administration process. Exam accommodations include extended time, a reduced distraction testing environment, use of assistive technology like a reader pen, and enlarged exam font. Course instructors may implement exam accommodations through the Testing Center or arrange to provide them within their areas.

Note-Taking accommodations allow students with disabilities that impact their ability to take notes a way to capture lecture content. Provision to audio record lectures and access to a laptop or tablet are common note-taking support accommodations.

If audio recording and notetaking technology do not provide access needed, students should contact Student Accessibility and Testing to discuss further accommodation.

Students with disabilities that impact their reading text printed on paper may be eligible for an alternative format accommodation. Implementation examples for this accommodation may include reading materials in digital format that can be read using text to speech technology, Braille, or enlarged print.

This category of accommodation provides equitable access to students who are deaf or heard of hearing. Student Accessibility and Testing works with students to determine the type of service needed and coordinates course access with students, instructors, and service providers.

Housing accommodations may be provided to address disability-related barriers in Residential Life housing. Examples of residential accommodations include a wheelchair accessible room, single room, strobe fire alarm or doorbell, or building access for personal care attendants.

Students with dietary restrictions and allergies may schedule a virtual meeting with a dietician who works with dining services. Students who would like to discuss accommodations for a meal plan modification should follow the housing accommodation request process.
